"The food was great, the weather was great, and the entertainment was outstanding...This was the best cruise I have ever been on!

If I can apply only 1/10th of what I digested over that weekend, then I can make a difference in the wilderness."

-Dylan O.

Enroll in a closed class
or reduce your course fee...

WFAC often needs help with various tasks.

You may be able to enroll in a course for which enrollment has closed or lower your course fee by helping the WFAC with one of these tasks:

Be a 'victim' in a simulated accident.

If you have taken a wilderness first aid course of 24 hours or more within the past 5 years,
or
If you are a medical professional with good first aid skills,

Please see details.

Transport course gear.

Transport course gear from Fullerton to Harwood Lodge (on Mt. Baldy) and help set it up.

This requires a strong back and a vehicle with a minimum cargo area of 72 cubic feet (height x weight x length), such as a van or large SUV or large pickup with a camper shell.

Load the gear into your vehicle between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. the Thursday before the course.

Drive gear directly to Harwood Lodge, unload it, and carry it into the lodge.

Some items are bulky but none weighs more than about 30 lbs. WFAC will arrange for a person at each end of the trip to help you carry the large items.

If you are on the waitlist for a course, doing this for the previous course will get you and a qualified companion confirmed enrollment in the same course for which you were waitlisted.

For example, you are waitlisted for the Spring 2011 course. You transport course gear for the Fall 2010 course. You will be moved off the waitlist into confirmed enrollment for the Spring 2011 course and you will receive confirmed enrollment for a companion who meets all the requirements for the course.

Help in the kitchen.

Help make the WFAC a memorable experience for participants (and for yourself!) by cooking and doing other kitchen tasks.

Kitchen staff enjoy this so much that they return--just for fun. (Join them and find out why!)

Contact Kitchen Supervisor, Markey:

Find out why kitchen staff 'regulars'
return time-after-time!

If you are registered for a course, doing this one day for the previous course will cover your fee for one day of the course.

If you are on the waitlist for a course, doing this one day for the previous course will get you confirmed enrollment in the same course for which you were waitlisted and will cover your fee for one day of the course.

For example, you are waitlisted for the Spring 2011 course. You cook Friday and Saturday for the Fall 2010 course. You will be moved off the waitlist into confirmed enrollment for the Spring 2011 course and the WFAC will wave your fee for two days.

Create and modify computer graphics.

The WFAC is replacing some graphic images in the course notes and adding others.

We need a computer artist who can work with course instructors to create graphics from images that have been marked up with changes. The artist must coordinate with our desktop publisher to make sure that technical specifications (resolution, file type, etc.) of the final product are satisfactory.

Assist with
Course Registration.

The Course Registrar needs someone with MS Word and Excel skills to organize student applications, enter data from them into the computer, and prepare course notes for mailing.

This is detail work and accuracy is important. The work must be done in Fullerton and scheduled at the mutual convenience of the Registrar and the Assistant.

A Mac laptop is provided.

A work session is 2 hours long and you can work more than one session, one session per day.

If you are enrolled in a course, working one session will earn you $24 enrollment fee reduction. If you are on the waitlist for a course, working one session will earn you $24 enrollment fee reduction and will confirm your enrollment.

Train staff in stage/wound makeup.

Train course staff in theatrical makeup or moulage (fake wounds).

If you want to be considered for a reduced enrollment fee in exchange for one of these tasks, email Steve at:

The need for help with a particular course may be filled by others ahead of you, so the need for your help is a possibility, rather than a guarantee, of fee reduction for a specific course date.
